Samuel Beckett

Samuel Beckett was one of the famous Irish novelist, playwright, short story writer, theater director, poet and literary translator. He was born at Dublin in 13 April 1906 and died at Paris in 22 Dec. 1989. Beckett was awarded the 1969 for Nobel Prize in Literature for his writing which in new forms for the novel and drama.  He also has known for “Theater of the Absurd”. His work generally focused on the idea of Existentialism and expressed what happens when human existence has no meaning or purpose and therefore all communication breaks down.
Waiting for Godot is remaining only two characters Vladimir and Estragon who waits someone named Godot. In this play no female character, Plot less play, no beginning no end.  This play also translation of his own original French language play “En attendant Godot”. Its Tragicomic play which divided into two acts.

Que.:-1) What connection do you see in the setting (‘ A country road, a tree and Evening’) of the play and these paintings.

Ans :- Caspar David Friedrich is a famous German romantic landscape painter. The visualization and portrayal of landscape in entirely new manner was Friedrich’s key innovation.  According to Friedrich that “The artist should paint not only what he sees before him but also what he sees within him…” So here following painting was drawn by Friedrich may be from which Beckett obtained idea of setting of the play. I think that here Beckett wants to connect with waiting and also two characters who stay on and their notice movements of sun under the tree.

Que.:-2) The tree is the only important ‘thing’ in the setting. What is the importance of tree in both acts? Why does Beckett grow few leaves in act 2 on the barren tree the tree has four or five leaves?

Ans :- The tree in the play is reflecting nature. Mostly people take nature as something which coordinate with human. Romanticism also sing a song of nature as supporter in every ups and downs in human life. But in this modern play Beckett shows nature as totally indifferent from human life. Here tree stands for it self and not representing any character from play. It don’t has anything to do with the quest and misery of any human’s  life. In second act there are leaves on tree which shows it does not wait with Vladimir and Estragon for Godot. Nature don’t need any Godot and it also don’t sympathies with human beings. It doesn’t have rationality but human always try to give rational meanings to it. It works on its own way and it has its own world.

Que.:-3) In both acts, evening falls into night and moon rises. How would you like to interpret this “Coming for night and moon” when actually they are waiting for Godot?

Ans :- We can interpret this moon as brightness in the night so, I think Beckett want to convey through this moon's brightness in the night means though the darkness of night there is somewhat hope like the brightness of the moon. So, we should not lost our hope, every day is new day.

Que.:-4) The director feels the setting with some debris. Can you read any meaning in the contours of debris in the setting of the play?

Ans :- Director fills setting with debris which shows that how freckle the materializing world is. It brakes down and don’t has capacity to stand again while on the other hand there is barren tree which in next act has some leaves. Nature or we can say reality can stand and sustain on its own, while cultural or fake things can be brake down in to the pieces. To show this shattered nature of world may be director has fills the setting with debris.

Que.:-5) The play begins with the dialogue “Nothing to be done”. How the theme of “Nothingness” does recur in the play?

Ans :-The beginning of the play it self suggest the meaninglessness of life. “Nothing to be done”. There is nothing in life to do. Though human beings always try to find some meaning in life same as Vladimir and Estragon tries to find meaning in waiting and also while killing the time. Doing nothing is also doing something. It don’t has any meaning but we always try to rationalize it. But at the end of the day every thing is meaningless.

Que.:-6)Do you agree: “The play (Waiting for Godot), we agreed, was a positive play, not negative, not pessimistic. As I saw it, with my blood and skin and eyes, the philosophy is: 'No matter what— atom bombs, hydrogen bombs, anything—life goes on. You can kill yourself, but you can't kill life." (E.G. Marshal who played Vladimir in original Broadway production 1950s)?

Ans :- I am agree with the ideas of Marshal because normally we thought about better future or happy ending of our life but I think that If we do work with appropriate time with proper process so that at the end of the life we can get as a result something more achieve rather which we think. Another thing is that nobody come to help and solve our problem hence we find solution own way without waiting of somebody.

Que.:-7) How are the props like hat and boots used in the play? What is the symbolical significance of these props?

Ans :- The props like hat and boots are representing human’s attraction towards mind or body. Hat symbolically represents the mind as Vladimir is with hat and he keep on thinking, same with lucky, when he starts thinking then to stop him one has to remove his hat. While Estragon has hat but he don’t use it he is more concentrate on his boots which are not comforting to him. In second act when he finds fit to him he is satisfy with it. It shows that how some people are constantly thinking and how some are constantly comforting their bodily needs. With this vast difference also both are at same place.

Que.:-8) Do you think that the obedience of Lucky is extremely irritating and nauseatic? Even when the master Pozzo is blind, he obediently hands the whip in his hand. Do you think that such a capacity of slavishness is unbelievable?

Ans :- Sometimes we can get chance to be free from some constructed situation though we can not grab the opportunity because we are habituated with that constructed situation, it can not permit us to think beyond. Lucky knows well that his master has no power to see anything yet he do not go away from him and serving him without the question of real freedom. It is unbelievable as rational thinker but those who living sheeple's kind of life, they can be driven with the flow without questioning.

Que.:-9)Who according to you is Godot? God? An object of desire? Death? Goal? Success? Or . . .

Ans :- In the play Godot used like God, object of desire, death, goal and success...etc. If I read as a religion point of view So that Godot is as God but If I think as a materialistic view so that Godot is used as desire so here we can see with various obstacles.  According to my point of view Godot is not interprets as god but as desire for something more achieve in the life which never fulfill. One desire complete then another desire keeps in our mind So that desire never ends and we all suffer through failure desire like Vladimir and Estragon.

Que.:-10)“The subject of the play is not Godot but ‘Waiting’” (Esslin, A Search for the Self). Do you agree? How can you justify your answer?

Ans :- I do agree with Martin Esslin. Because if Godot was subject of the play at the end we might have some clarity that who is Godot and may be he will come also at the end. But the subject of the play is waiting. It is so because Beckett wants to make us feel the flow of time during waiting, and how our whole life is only waiting for death. So we can say that the subject of play is waiting and not Godot.

Que.:-11)Do you think that plays like this can better be ‘read’ than ‘viewed’ as it requires a lot of thinking on the part of readers, while viewing, the torrent of dialogues does not give ample time and space to ‘think’? Or is it that the audio-visuals help in better understanding of the play?

Ans :-  According to me the reading and viewing both can be beneficial and required of the play. Because if you only watch the movie then it can be bore. Because it has the continous dialogues and less action. For the understanding of the deeper philosophy one has to read the play. Only reading also makes you boring because you will not be able to imagine Vladimir and Estragon and their useless action. We have to done both the things in the class which enriched our understanding of the play.

ELT- The role of English in India

In the first Unit "The Role of English in India", there is five Essay of English Language.

Image result for english learning

1. Teaching of English for Science and Technology by R. S. Sharma
2. Teaching English as 'Second Language' in India By Kapil Kapoor
3. Socio-Cultural Dimensions of English as a Second language by Rekha Aslam
4. Teaching English as a second language in Indian focus on objectives by Shivendra K. Verma
5. The teaching of English: A plea for practical Attitude by R. K. Singh

In all the Essay we can find some important point as well as Drawbacks. As we know that every coin has two sides the same way in all the essay we can find positive as well as some negative aspects.

1. what is the English Language For You?

  • As we know that language is a system of Communication. The particular country uses a particular language. Like in India we all are using our Mother language Gujarati. Same way every nation has their own Mother language but every language has its own subdivision. The English language is considered a universal language because it is the most spoken language. Like if you have not idea about any other language then you can use the English language. For me, the English language is a way to commute with other countries. We can learn other languages as well but the English language is easy to learn because there are many people who are using this particular language. So that you can communicate with them and improve your language. People also believe that if you have the best command on the English language then it is easy to build your future or more opportunity for you.

2. what kind of challenges you are facing and have faced while learning this language?

As we know that to learn new things we have to work hard or we have to give the time. Apart from that when you are trying to do this you may face many problems while learning the particular language. If you are familiar with your language then you can not find trouble for using that but if you are using the language which is new for you then you may think and then speak. As we believe that,

    "Think before you speak anything"

English is the best language but learning a second language is very difficult. If you are learning English in a foreign country then you may face many problems to understand but if you are living there then it is easy to learn because you have that Atmosphere. We are facing problems because we don't have that kind of atmosphere at our university or county. We have many problems in our life but some challenges are important for you and we are facing problems but believing our self is best to learn new things.

3. write in brief you understanding about anyone essay.

Teaching English as 'Second Language' in India By Kapil Kapoor is a very interesting essay. He started from history of the English language. In this easy I found two interesting points like

# Power = Knowledge
# Eliot class = Lower class

Power and knowledge theory by Michael Foucault is a very interesting theory. In this theory, we can see how power creates knowledge. Foreign language is the third language because first is our mother language then the second language is after one or more Indian Language which is primary and more significantly. It is true that the ruling class demanded English. Other Important points like conceptual structure,

1. Modernization
2. Mythology
3. Language policy

So when we are thinking about something, we always think in our mother language, not in other languages.

4. According to you which position the English Language should be given?

English is good language and may be easy to learn because there are other languages but I find that most of the people are using the English language rather than any other language. You can not speak like American people but you can understand the language or you can get an idea about what they are trying to say. Mother language is an important language but second language which we have to learn is the English language. So after Mother language, I will give the more important to the English language.

5. How you see your future with the English Language?
If you have the best command of the English language then it will help you a lot because nowadays the English language is very important. You may find more opportunities if you have knowledge about this language.  As we know that the Indian government has not taken the English language as a national speaking language but still English language is used in every part of official work in the Indian government. Another important point is that we can see that half of the world is using the English language as their national language. In technology using technology also we can find one common language which is the English language. No doubt we can find other options but Most of the people use the English language. So I can say that the English language is the best language to build your future.

August : Patriotism and Religious fervour

August month is most of we called it religious month as Indian we know we are most notable country for lost of celebration country. During this month specially Gujarati celebrate lost of religious festivals like Rakshabandhan, Nagpanchami, Shitala Satham, Janmashtami, Id Mubarak etc. But it is my illusion because other states also celebrates this kind of days.
Religious VS Science

In the real sense people free from religious beliefs because still people believe to celebrate shitala sath doing worship to Shitalamata to believing she will save from chickenpox and smallpox but scientist vaccination helpful for us, not any goddess myrical. And most of people don't know about scientist Edward Jenner who found vaccination to spoil varial infection. While Magal massion kind of movie to appreciate the religious so it like bothering for us. How can be  religious ideas connect with science? Because both are dealing with different ideas.

Patriotism VS Religious

During this month most people busy to celebrate religious festivals and they may be forgotten 15th August independence day behind history how we get freedom, we have a cruel history behind freedom it is a partition of India divided two-country - India and Pakistan, most of the people forget partition upon the nonsense based religion. So it is fair to forget the  scene. Now again our most of Political party do that thing and we are celebrating and clapping when they speak on religious.

Now most of the  believe nation and country both are same but it is not synonyms word while it is quite a different word nation means - A nation is officially observed as a group of people who share the same cultural identity. They share the same language, culture and lineages. While County means Country, conversely, is synonymous with ‘State’ as it applies to self-governing political identities. So both means different.
Furthermore how political parties direct people to Nation.

Nowadays Nation word is more considering by political leaders this is not good sign for free India. In the post colonial discourse partition ideals for blame to lawyer John Radcliff but it is not one person who agree with the partition but also we are responsible and government responsible that partition. It is other side of reality, I don’t say European were not responsible for partition but they fulfilled major role for partition. When we say some of was responsible for something so it may be our weakness that why someone fulfilled their desire or motive. That type of history development to understanding present time. Nation vs State poem by Bhagwat Rawat. His poem is a satire on political leaders more consider word nation. And they are try divide in regions and caste but it is real harmful for us.

Thank You

                         - by Samuel Beckett

The Shortest Play by Samuel Beckett

Samuel Barclay Beckett 13 April 1906 – 22 December 1989) was an Irish novelist, playwright, short story writer, theatre director, poet, and literary translator. A resident of Paris for most of his adult life, he wrote in both English and French.
Beckett's work offers a bleak, tragicomic outlook on human existence, often coupled with black comedy and gallows humor, and became increasingly minimalist in his later career. He is considered one of the last modernist writers, and one of the key figures in what Martin Esslin called the "Theater of the Absurd."[3]
Beckett was awarded the 1969 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his writing, which—in new forms for the novel and drama—in the destitution of modern man acquires its elevation."[4] He was elected Saoi of Aosdána in 1984.

  • The script of the play:-

CURTAIN UP:

1. Faint light on stage littered with miscellaneous rubbish. Hold about five seconds.
2. Faint brief cry and immediately inspiration and slow increase of light together reaching maximum - together in about ten seconds. Silence and hold for about five seconds.
3. Expiration and slow decrease of light together reaching minimum together (light as in 1) in about ten seconds and immediately cry as before. Silence and hold about five seconds.

CURTAIN DOWN...

1 ) Breath by Damien Hirst

In this video we can see this overlaid medicine rubbish and sounds of some  breath may be it mean if we have lot of medicine or ultimately meaning we have solution of our ill-health even death is immoral truth for everyone. At last breath medicine become rubbish, it is only time passing solution.

2)  Breath by Liana De Jordan

In this video clip or movie I found so many types of fruits and vegetable. Fruit connected with richness, overindulgence and temptation and earthly pleasure. Another I can say It's connected with Myth. Sometime fruit ride us to luxurious life style which get during our life from nature but human being still never satisfied.

4) Samuel Beckett’s play Breath

This video start with nature and how nature change looks. And I can see as like someone mind and mind visual everything  this is so intense, when there are no words everything turns to depend on our own vision and how we see things. May be it was a sad for everyone because time running as like uncountable speed and life is like just two minutes is so sad, I guess that's how life is felt, just like two minutes. And then the objects, which I cannot relate them to anything but to the past, and to death, so we can just seen our blurred memory of life.  Thousands of belongings that talks by themselves about people that don't exist anymore. So sad, but this video is a strongly appealing us. And I can say that this video is a fantastic modern interpretation.

Thinking Activity on "The Waste Land"By T.S.Eliot

Thinking Activity on "The Waste Land"By T.S.Eliot

Image result for wasteland by ts eliot

  • About ' The Waste land ' :-
In modern era epic poem was very famous. During that time T.S.Eliot written one of the modern epic poem " The Waste Land". This epic poem divided into different five parts like as,

1) The Burial Of the Dead ( 76 Lines )
2) A game of Chess ( 96 Lines )
3) The Fire Sermon ( 139 Lines )
4) Death by Water ( 10 lines )
5) What the thunder Said ( 113 Lines )

" The Waste land " also represented the sexual perversion and spiritual degradation. This poem also difficult to understand because in the poem T.S.Eliot used various myths and  references with symbolic way. This poem presented writers stream of consciousness, first world war, industrialization, worried of atmosphere, globalization with Indian mythical ways.

Q-1) What are your views on the following image after reading 'The Waste Land'? Do you think that Eliot is regressive as compared to Nietzche's views? or Has Eliot achieved universality of thought by recalling mytho-historical answer to the contemporary malaise?

Ans :- Fried-rich Nietzsche's has noble thought of Ubermensch and it is significant rather than the idea of T.S.Eliot.  Normally Eliot's thoughts related as regressive. Nowadays If Some people and specific groups are suggesting to joining with them. May be same experience with you. Right ? I will try to explain with example of religion for better understanding. Those type of group says for take to help in religions festival and activities for moral living. So that people be-fool through language and particular things. How can they leads towards morality and rituals?. Generally we found that those groups people who are involved themselves in sexual perversion and immoral things.

Q- 2) Prior to the speech, Gustaf Hellström of the Swedish Academy made these remarks:What are your views regarding these comments? Is it true that giving free vent to the repressed 'primitive instinct' lead us to happy and satisfied life? or do you agree with Eliot's view that 'salvation of man lies in the preservation of the cultural tradition'?

Ans:- Freud and Nietzsche both are the contemporaries but their background and field of working is different. Freud is believed in individuality and talk about "primitive instinct" where as Eliot believed in preservation of cultural traditions which means all together. Freud was wrote that for progress of any individual primitive instinct was needed but in order to preserve tradition Eliot says that their is need for to grew together, for that example of Buddha was perhaps suitable.

Q-3) Write about allusions to the Indian thoughts in 'The Waste Land'. (Where, How and Why are the Indian thoughts referred?)

Ans :- In the last part of the poem 'What the Thunder Said', Eliot takes the reference of Indian myths and spiritual ideologies like

"Ganga was sunken, and the limps leaves
waited for rain, while the black clouds
gathered far distant, over Himvant
The jungle crouched, humped in silence."\

Then Eliot gives three 'Da'

1)Datta- to give not only charity but giving oneself for some noble cause.

2) Dayadhvam- Sympathies yourself with the sorrows and suffering of others, come out of your isolation and love into others.

3)Damyata- Self control, control over one's passion and desire.

So, according to me Eliot took Indian thoughts in his poem because he believes that peace is in the air of India and India is spiritually high, so it might be the indication of getting the revelation from the sexual perversion and spiritual degradation from the philosophies of India.
